Key Pieces You Need in Your Capsule Wardrobe

While fashion used to be about wearing a brand new outfit for every occasion, we’re now more conscious of the effects of the fashion industry on the world around us. Being aware of the impacts of creating and selling clothes means that we are now more interested in investing in key pieces that can be worn in multiple situations and work well with the rest of our wardrobe in a way that creates a large range of outfit choices. Rather than overflowing wardrobes with clothes that don’t fit properly or that you only wear once every few months, a more minimal approach to your wardrobe also helps declutter your mind. Having a capsule wardrobe means taking time and consideration with the pieces you choose to purchase, whether that means checking the origins of the textiles, the policies of the designers when it comes to eco credentials, and focusing on the fit. While you might still need a separate set of clothes for your activewear and nightwear, your capsule wardrobe should cover your day to day needs from office to occasion. Here are the key pieces you need to consider.

Trousers

You will need a go to pair of jeans so make sure that you find the perfect fit taking the rise, length, and cut into consideration. If you want a more relaxed wardrobe then opt for loose fit as long as you can still work these around other pieces and feel confident to dress them up. If your wardrobe doesn’t need to be too formal then you can always stretch to two pairs of jeans in different styles if you know you will get plenty of opportunity to wear them. Another pair of trousers that are great to have are straight leg cotton trousers as they can be worn for officewear but can be versitile enough for other looks.

Skirts & Dresses

Find a skirt that fits you and feels comfortable enough to wear through all seasons. You can decide on a short or long length depending on how often you think you would like to wear it, or if you think you would wear skirts frequently, drop one of your trouser choices and replace it with another skirt.

You’re likely to require an occasion dress so find something that is classic and can be amended to suit the occasion appropriately. If you do need something specific for a big occasion, see if you can rent a dress from a local boutique instead of keeping another item in your closet.

A casual sundress is a great option and can be made into a casual, cute but structured look by adding a pair of sneakers and a blazer

Shirts

For your upper half you will likely need the most items as this is the change that can make the most impact.

Your key items need to be a t-shirt, a shirt/blouse, a jumper, vests (can be multiple as they don’t take up too space and are incredibly versatile), and a blazer.

Your t-shirt and vests can be used across all seasons and also used for layering in the colder months. You can't go wrong with designer shirts, you will find no end to the possibilities of outfit choices - the optimum in day to night chic. A blazer can be oversized or fitted depending on your general style but regardless of fit, this can easily be casual or formal depending on the rest of your outfit and the accessories you choose.

Outerwear

This may vary depending on which part of the world you live in and you can always store unnecessary coats and jackets elsewhere until the right season comes round.

Ideally you need a lightweight jacket such as a denim, leather, or cotton jacket that will be ideal to easily shrug on and off. If you live somewhere that gets a lot of rainfall, a light waterproof jacket will be more useful and can still be incredibly stylish.

You may need a large winter coat and if so you are best opting for a long length with the potential to change up the appearance by changing small details such as the belt.

A luxury hoodie in a material such as cashmere will last a lifetime if looked after correctly. Cashmere is a great material for a cashmere wardrobe as it has temperature regulating properties.

Shoes

You will know best which type of shoes you are most likely to wear but the best selection is flats (ballet pumps or sandals for example), a pair of comfortable high heels, and a trusty pair of trainers. Taking care of your shoes is important to keeping them looking fresh. Make sure you understand what your shoes are made of so you know how to clean them correctly and make them last as long as possible.

When thinking about your capsule wardrobe, think about the colour scheme you want to run through your pieces. It’s easier to mix and match your clothing if you go for neutral tones but if beige, cream and white don’t represent your style you can always go for pastel shades or earthy tones.
